UWAYE recognises the presence of diversity within STEM and aims to acknowledge the role it plays in industry. We have previously run numerous successful diversity based events which has evolved with changing themes every year.
Diversity EVENING
Diversity Evening is one of UWAYE’S flagship events in which representatives from different companies are invited to share their various learnings acquired from their engineering backgrounds, and their own individual diverse experiences and traits, that have shaped them professionally in their careers today.
2025: Engineering Without Limits: Diversity in Every Dimension
UWAYE, together with industry partners Mott MacDonald, Webuild, KPMG Australia, and SLB, hosted Engineering Without Limits: Diversity in Every Dimension. It was an empowering evening that highlighted the importance of inclusion, adaptability, and communication as core drivers of success in engineering.
The event began with a panel discussion where industry professionals shared their career journeys and reflected on challenges they had overcome. The conversation showcased how diverse perspectives, resilience, and adaptability can shape stronger career paths and foster innovation across engineering fields. Following the panel, students participated in an interactive soft skills workshop. Company representatives led rotating sessions that exposed attendees to a range of essential workplace skills such as emotional intelligence, adaptability, problem-solving, and effective communication. These activities gave students practical insights and created opportunities to directly engage with professionals.

2024: Beyond the University Blueprint; What Makes a Well-Rounded Engineer?
UWAYE collaborated with Women in Mathematical Sciences (WiEMS) yet again, hosting “Beyond the University Blueprint; What Makes a Well-Rounded Engineer?” which focused on skills needed for workforce success, beyond the technical knowledge gained at university.
The evening consisted of two rounds of panel discussions where company representatives shared their unique career journeys and insight into challenges faced in the engineering field. This was followed by a networking session as well as a soft skills workshop. Students were able to rotate between companies, exposing them to as many representatives and skills as possible.
2023: Diverse Minds Meet Innovation
UWAYE and Women in Mathematical Sciences (WiEMS) once again collaborated to host the 'Diverse Minds Meet Innovation' event which focused on how diversity played a significant role in their company's innovation.
Similar to 2022 Changing with the Times' event, the evening featured several rounds of soft skill workshop led by the industry professionals and a panel discussion with panellists from various engineering disciplines and industries.
2022: Changing with the Times: Exploring Engineering Pathways
UWAYE collaborated with UWA Women in Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (WiEMS) to host the first ever ‘Changing with the times: Exploring Engineering Pathways’ Event.
The networking event featured a round of soft skill activities, in which students collaborated and gained insight from companies about various soft skills that are valuable and applicable in the different industries today.
The night also featured 2 rounds of panel discussions in which panelists discussed and answered questions regarding their unique career pathways and insight into diverse pathways that engineering can take you on.
2021: Diversity of Thought Evening
UWAYE’S 2021 Diversity of Thought event acknowledged the strength in diversity and invited companies to showcase how diversity has positively impacted their company.
Speakers were invited to speak and join the panel hosted, in which they discussed their own personal experiences and how their own diversity has shaped them today and impacted their career trajectory.
Students also had the opportunity to collaborate with various representatives through a Diversity and Inclusion Design case study, hosted by HATCH. Attendees learned on the importance of a D & I design, and how it can foster an inclusive work environment, and create value for communities and clients.
